About the event
Bookbinding is an ancient and important art, essential to telling the stories that matter most to humanity across space, time, and generations. And there is perhaps no older form of bookbinding than Coptic binding -- a tradition begun 2,000 years ago by the Coptic priests of Ancient Egypt, recognizable by its beautiful yet sturdy stitching worked across the book's exposed spine. Now, it's your turn to learn this ancient book art and take a piece of the history home with you with your own Coptic notebook or sketchbook!
This three-hour course will be guided by the professional guidance of local bookbinder and Siding 14 Gallery owner Challen Gladman. Challen (they/them) is an artist living and working in Ponoka, Alberta, with a passion not only for books, but also for writing (both novels and comics!), painting, pottery, and traditional and digital art (among so many other things they're still excited to try for the first time!). They have also been classically trained as a storyteller and tutor, with a keen interest in learning new things and in helping others to do the same -- making them the perfect mentor as you embark on your next artistic journey!
Paid pre-registration is required to attend this event. Please note that this course is limited to participants 15+ years of age. All supplies included -- just bring yourself and a desire to learn!
