About Our Books

Our handbound books are entirely made from scratch -- formatted, printed, and collated in-house, then bound in our own luxurious covers of handmade Tibetan Lokta paper. We use two main styles of bookbinding, each with their own beautiful results. One is our traditional Rustic style, recognizable for its hemp cord binding knotted at the front cover; these "paperback" books are sturdy with a homespun charm, and are faster to make and therefore more affordable. Our second bookbinding style is a Coptic binding, recognizable for its exposed book spines and the braided stitching across them; these "hardcover" books are bound with painstaking care, using a 2,000-year-old technique first developed by the Coptic Priests of Ancient Egypt, and result in a truly gorgeous codex which looks delicate (but is remarkably strong!) and is capable of opening completely flat. Whichever you choose, all of our books are labours of love -- and we would love to make one just for you!

About the Novel

1984 / Nineteen Eighty-Four, called "George Orwell's dystopian masterpiece" by Penguin Books and noted as one of the BBC's "100 Novels That Shaped Our World," is a strikingly cynical and undeniably influential commentary on twentieth-century politics and the rise of fascism through bureaucratic control. Following the protagonist Winston Smith, readers fall deeply into the politically totalitarian world of the Party and Big Brother, a governmental regime whose presence looms over all life, thought, and narrative, controlling access to even the thoughts in citizens' own heads by editing history at the Ministry of Truth. But when Winston, a Ministry worker, rebelliously falls in love with a fellow worker named Julia, he realizes the value of freedom -- and its horrible cost.
